| Cara Heads-Lane had Olympic dreams. Realizing she had potential but was not where she needed to be to compete as an elite level weightlifter, Heads-Lane knew something had to change. She began feeling the Lord’s call to take a leap of faith. So about three years ago she did just that, leaving the comforts of her hometown of Costa Mesa, California and moving across the country to train with Team Savannah in Georgia.
“I just had to put it in the Lord’s hands,” said Heads-Lane. “It involved a lot of prayer, a lot of searching the word and saying, ‘Lord, this is what your word says. I’m going to stand on it, I’m going to believe you for it. You’ve done some awesome things in my life, I’m just going to continue to trust you.”
Heads-Lane is proof that God is faithful. Her hopes of competing in the 2000 Olympic games in Australia were fulfilled. In the first-ever games where there was women’s weightlifting, Heads-Lane finished seventh in the 75 kg. Class. Since her move to Savannah, she has set every American record in her weight class and has won two of the last three national championships.
“My faith has grown so much,” said Heads-Lane, who gave her life to Christ when she was 13. “ My prayer life, my relationship with my husband, everything I gave over to the Lord has increased and I'm so thankful for that.”
But do not think everything went perfectly for Heads-Lane. She faced her share of challenges but was always victorious because she relied on what God saysnot her circumstances.
“Always in the word,” she said. “That’s how I get through it with flying colors. Obstacles are always going to come up and things are always going to trip you up, slow you down, possibly discourage you. But with the Lord, you may be struck down but not destroyed and that’s what’s so exciting. I get so happy because all things are possible with God. The power that resurrected Jesus Christ we have access to. And if you’ll take that and believe that and put that in your heart you can overcome anything.”
With no regard ever to circumstances, Heads-Lane is always giving thanks and praise to the Lord.
“I have to say, ‘thank you Lord’ because He’s the one who got me where I am today and will continue to keep me going where I want to go and need to go,” said Heads-Lane. “A lot of times people will tell me, ‘you’re glowing.’ That’s solely the joy and the desire to love on God. I can’t explain it, it’s so awesome though.”
