In pro hockey, you're protected. You get enough 'feel-goods' that you can think you're special and important because you have a gift of playing. You hear the crowds chanting, 'Chico, Chico'. You get to stay in a hockey cocoon where everyone makes you feel special.

The first rush is outstanding. You win a big game or a big series, and the peace and contentment you get is a good imitation of the real thing, but it never lasts.

In 1980, I wasn't focused on anything but my hockey. My family came second. We got to the playoffs, and I didn't play that much in the spring. Even though we won the Cup, I was thirty-two, I realized I was getting older and that I didn't have the total control of things I had once thought I did.

What I learned since 1980 was that we get nervous or frustrated or out of sync, we tend to narrow to a fine focus, dictating to ourselves what we think the future should be. But there's too much you can't control. God allows you, through prayer and reading His Word, to switch your focus to the bigger picture. I might allow eight goals in a game, but, in spite of that, the central aspect of inner peace remains. God says you are His child and you can have a relationship with Him through Jesus. If you're important to the Creator of the universe, then, in the bigger picture, it doesn't matter what your teammates or neighbors might think.

With faith, all you need to do is promise God that you'll be the best you can be. He's in control of the rest. You are what you are. God simply want you to give Him your best stuff. All God is saying is put your skates on and step onto the ice. He'll take care of the rest.

Hockey led me to my wife. It lead me to getting an education. It led me to my faith. I became a Christian through my hockey, and that was a significant part of the playoffs in 1980 - I finally understood that God has a part in our lives. Hockey has lead me to every good thing in my life.
