| I was one of those guys who was hoping to spend his entire career in one city. But God was working and sending us somewhere else, and that's how I got to be in Atlanta. I'm actually really enjoying it. When you follow God's will, it always ends up being a much sweeter situation than you think it would be otherwise, and Atlanta hasn't disappointed us.
Throughout the lockout process (in 1998-99), my wife and I prayed about it, asking the Lord to allow His will to unfold for us. We didn't know how short or how long of a period we would have to continue our prayer once the lockout ended, so we just asked him for clarity of mind as we went into it. Once the lockout was raised, everything started to be a frenzy.
Denver was holding on to my rights, and we didn't know if the Lord might keep us there, so we kept that option open. But as the first week after the lockout came to a close, it looked like my opportunity to stay in Denver was uncertain. So we started looking for options, which God did provide for us --some wonderful options.
It came down to Utah and Atlanta, and we continued to pray for more clarity and that the decision we would make would be in line with the decision the Lord would want for us. We felt that He had been moving us for a couple of days toward Atlanta. For me to be absolutely sure, I wanted to take another 48 hours in prayer. It's been a funny thing, at least in my life, that whenever I take the extra time to make sure that's what God wants for me, it always ends up working out very nicely. He has never disappointed us.
There is a variety of things I'd like to do (after my career). We've been praying and asking the Lord to use me in my post-basketball career. I had all these ideas of doing sportscasting and newscasting and things of that nature.
But I've just come to the conclusion recently that the Lord will make those opportunities available when it's time. Now I have to concentrate on being a good husband to my wife and a good dad to my children, and serving the NBA the best way I can. This is where He has put me right now. When it's time to make the transition, He'll create the opportunities for me. He'll put me in the best situation where He can use me.
