| My faith in Jesus Christ has played a huge role in my life from day one. Sometimes I've drawn upon His strength, and sometimes I've tried to just figure things out for myself. When I've been closest in my relationship with Christ and when I've drawn on His strength is when I've been the most powerful person.
You need that type of power when you're going through the minor leagues. Some of the things I faced, I was able to hold on just because of Christ. And reading the Bible on a daily basis made a huge difference to me in the minor leagues and helped me stay humble in the big leagues.
(Baseball clubhouses) are not a strong biblical surrounding -- to say the least. I try to lead by example, but of course I'm not perfect, either, and I make mistakes. I believe in God, and that's what I try to display in the course of my daily business.
Baseball is 75 percent failure, and it takes a lot of faith to keep yourself sane during the season. It would be a lot easier if you were at a Bible conference instead of a baseball locker room. It can be a lonely experience. But I have a strong family and a strong group of friends. You just put your faith in God and know that in the end it's all going to be worth it.
The only time I really perform well is when I'm the most humble. When I start feeling like I'm better than I probably am, that's when things start to slip.
