Goal Trees

One of the techniques I use in goal setting sessions is called the "Goal Tree." It is a system of designing long term goals. It requires you to set a long term goal, then plan specific short term goals to reach that original goal.
An example of a "Goal Tree" - "I want to add 30 pounds to my bench press."

How? "I will work on a solid bench press program."

When? "Three days a week."

Where? "At the high school weight room."

With Whom? "With Dave and Chris."

What Kind of program." "I'm going to talk to Coach Auchstetter and find out what I should be doing."

When will you talk to him? "This Tuesday."

How will you know you are staying on track? "I plan on keeping a training journal."

As you can see, the idea is to set up as many of your goal's steps as you can. This gives you specific things you must do to complete your goal. If you are not doing the little steps, the big goals will not be met.
